Nagasawa Rosetsu: Ink Painting Entertainer

Nagasawa Rosetsu is known as an eccentric painter who was active in Kyoto during the mid-Edo period. I like to introduce him as a “sumi-e entertainer.” His ink paintings are extremely unique, using gradations of ink to create a variety of expressions.

His brushwork is astonishingly fast, achieving complex expressions with just a few strokes. This technique has earned him the nickname “magical hands.” Nagasawa Rosetsu used his skills to infuse humor into his work, providing enjoyment to the viewers.
